I never knew he was buried so close to where I lived and being ex RAF myself, it seemed a natural thing for me to do.
The image itself was made in Photoshop and is made up of 7 layers. The gravestone, a Spitfire Mk Vb in flight, a graduated fill and the text layers with drop shadows. The spitfire is from my archives and is of the type, and mark, that Pilot Officer Magee was flying when the accident happened. The graduated fill was added to 'tone down' the bright colour of the yellow roses and to ensure the text could be read clearly.
The poem itself is very well known and has been quoted and paraphrased many times. Most notably, in my view, by President Ronald Reagan on his address to the nation on 28th January 1986.
